Welcome to the Toshiba Linux Utilities pages. The purpose of these pages is to act as reference point for my small series of programs to control the more Toshiba specific aspects of their laptops. In particular they allow many of the settings controlled by either Toshiba's MaxTime or Power Saver utilities to be changed under Linux. The code is licensed under the GNU Public licence (GPL).

These utilities are designed for Linux, in there current state they will not compile or run on other Unix or Unix like operating systems, however I would happly accept patches that change this situation.
The Toshiba Linux utilities are specific to Toshiba laptops, and will not run on laptops from other manufactures. In addition they will not run on Satellite 16xx, 17xx, 3000 and 35DVD machines from Toshiba either. These models sport Pheonix BIOS'es and are made in that part of China that is not part of China. In short they are not true Toshiba laptops and are unlikely to ever be supported by the Toshiba Linux Utilities.

Microsoft Windows

Please note that I am not a free replacement support operation for your Microsoft Windows problems. I do not answer questions about Toshiba laptops under Windows unless you are willing to pay for my time.
However I do now a port of my fan program to Microsoft Windows. The program however is also shareware but has a very reasonable registration fee. So if you find it useful pay up. For those looking for a way to say thanks thanks for all the effort I put into the Toshiba Linux Utilities, feel free to register a copy even if you don't run Microsoft Windows.

Kampala — DESPITE the fact that coffee continues to command a higher premium, Uganda's producers have not realised this opportunity. Farmers still pick unripe coffee beans and factory owners still process wet coffee with moisture content above 14%.
The good news is that Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) has embarked on a training programme of coffee farmers and quality controllers targeting the specialty market.
From the art of roasting to blending techniques, more than 30 coffee cuppers from the private and public sector have been trained on how to boost the quality of their coffee.

The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) of USA last month dispatched a team of coffee experts to train quality controllers. The five-day training included cupping and grading exercises, and exposed participants to market requirements for specialty coffee, which commands premium prices on world markets.
The training focused entirely on cupping, a method of systematically evaluating the aroma and taste of coffee beans. Proper cupping requires the adherence to an exacting set of brewing standards and a formal step-by-step evaluation process.

Genentech

It's true that the precious-unique-culture stuff can be overemphasized. Roche has indeed been insisting that they want to preserve Genentech's entrepreneurial spirit (although, to be honest, they'd say that no matter what they were really thinking - what are they going to do, say that they really just want all the Avastin revenue and whatever else is high up in the pipeline?) And, as the article correctly points out, there have been any number of good-sized biotech outfits taken over by Big Pharma over the years.

But what worries me a bit is what's happened to some of those biotechs. It really is rare, from what I can see, for a company's culture to stay the same after something like this happens. It's a bit like those singers who make it big from obscurity; you read these articles saying that they're just the same small-town person that they always were. Right - that would be the least likely outcome of them all.
The thing is, the atmosphere of the acquiring company is going to seep in, no matter what. The new projects are going to be approved using the processes of the larger company, aren't they? They'll be expected to fit into a new, larger picture, and to find their place. And the compounds that advance will advance against the larger company's criteria, not the ones in place under the old regime.

Those are just the direct effects on research. What might be a larger difference is a psychological one. As a stand-alone company, even one the size of Genentech, you live by your own wits, but that changes. As part of a larger company, you know that there are other projects out there, other divisions, and that some of these will be expected to pick up the slack now and then. It's a big company, after all. It'll keep going, even if you don't deliver this year. Right? That's actually one of the trickier parts about running a company with a lot of sites and research areas - the inevitable frictions when one group or another feels (sometimes correctly) that they're being leaned on more than those lazy bums over in XYZ, who haven't delivered a clinical candidate since (fill in the year).

Roche Holding

NEW YORK, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding (ROG.VX) on Wednesday sold $16 billion in a six-part debt sale, the largest this year, a market source familiar with the sale said.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to help finance its $42 billion hostile takeover bid for U.S. biotechnology company Genetech Inc, the source added.

The sale included:

-- $3 billion in one-year floating-rate notes yielding 1.00 percentage points over the three-month London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR);
-- $750 million in two-year floating-rate notes yielding 2.00 percentage points over three-month LIBOR;
-- $2.5 billion in 3-year notes yielding 3.35 percentage points over U.S. Treasuries;
-- $2.75 billion in five-year notes yielding 3.35 percentage points over Treasuries;
-- $4.5 billion in 10-year notes yielding 3.45 percentage points over Treasuries; and
-- $2.5 billion in 30-year bonds yielding 3.65 percentage points over Treasuries.
The joint lead managers on the sale were Banc of America Securities, Citigroup Global Markets and JPMorgan.

The margin requirements must be respected by Friday at 23:00 GMT and before holidays.
